A Metrorail train travelling to KwaDukuza was hijacked last week when passengers forced the driver to deviate from her route.
The train was en route from Durban to Stanger, when, at Duffs Road, commuters forced train driver Zina Katzen to deviate and head towards KwaMashu.
It was when she was on the phone to the operational centre asking for assistance that her manager overheard commuters threatening her.
“Residents of KwaMashu are furious because trains from Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) were allegedly causing delays on the railway lines,” said the United National Transport Union media and liaison officer, Sonja Carstens.
“However, the problems started due to cable theft and the theft of signals in the area.”
Since the incident, additional security measures have been taken, including security escorts and assistance from SAPS.
