UPDATE: Millions up in flames in Driefontein

Last year three men handed themselves over to the police for setting the hall alight

The Driefontein hall that was burnt down by angry protesters last year will cost R1.1 million to be repaired.

Last year April disgruntled Driefontein protesters took to the streets in a protest against the election of an ANC candidate. Fourteen people were arrested for public violence during the mass protest. The community hall which was used for school events, public and ward committee meetings was torched in the process.

DA ward 21 councillor Tommy du Toit said that organising public events was difficult in the area without a hall for people to meet in.

“There is a much smaller venue – the old community centre – that barely holds about 50 people.

“People have weddings and funerals there and they can hardly fit in. The same place is also used as a day care centre during the week.

“Any meetings have to take place after four when the day care closes. It is inconvenient.”

Du Toit said the KwaDukuza municipality had been liaising with their insurance company over the damage, which would cost R1.1 million to repair.

Last year three men handed themselves over to the police for setting the hall alight.

Umhlali SAPS warrant officer Vinny Pillay said the case against the men had been withdrawn and that no further arrests had been made.
