Police have stepped up patrols in Nkobongo and Shakas Head following six murders over the past two weeks.
Umhlali SAPS spokesperson Vinny Pillay said there had been three in Shakas Head and three in Shakaskraal, including Nkobongo.
However, the number is only based on what was reported to the police. Nkobongo councillor, Ali Ngidi, said he believed there had been four murders in his area.
“We even had a mass prayer held on Sunday, March 11, where we asked God to intervene in this problem. However, I can confirm that this past weekend saw high visibility of police in the township,” said Ngidi.
In Shakas Head, former CPF chairperson Hloniphani Mtshali said the biggest problem was the number of illegal firearms.
“We experience lots of armed robberies and house breakings, resulting in people being killed. The issue of drugs and alcohol is another cause of crime.”
