The R102 is currently closed at Ntshawini just outside Stanger due to a service delivery protest over RDP houses.

Two people have been arrested for public violence since the residents of Ntshawini began protesting on Sunday night.

The protesters have blocked the R102 with burning tyres and since last night were reportedly pelting cars that attempted to get through with stones.

Rumors of cars being set alight with petrol bombs are reportedly false. Ntshawini councillor Welcome Ntuli said that an old car had been used to help block the road and that this may have been the source of the rumour.

“As far as I know no vehicles were burnt,” said Ntuli.

Ntshawini residents are frustrated because RDP houses were promised to them in 2013 and they apparently have not received any feedback on what is causing the delay.

KZN police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said police are monitoring the protest and hope to have the road open as soon as possible.

Ntshawini has experienced some violent protests in the past year. Last May three cane trucks were burnt during a protest after a pedestrian was killed in a motor vehicle accident.
