A 52-year-old man was arrested with an unlicensed firearm after throwing stones at cars on the R102 on Monday.
According to Tongaat SAPS spokesperson warrant officer Manisha Maharaj-Marie, at about 11pm on Monday night they received information that a man was throwing stones at passing motorists on the R102 just past Buffelsdale.
“Upon arrival the officers found an African male fitting the description and, upon searching him, they discovered he was in possession of a silver 9mm handgun and live rounds of ammunition,” said Maharaj-Marie.
“He was not in possession of a firearm licence.”
When the officers attempted to arrest the man he put up a fight but was eventually subdued.
The man appeared in court on Tuesday to face charges for the possession of an unlicensed firearm.
Tongaat station commander Colonel Santha Moodley commended the officers on their excellent work and encouraged the community to come forward with any suspicious activity.
“This was a simple complaint of stone throwing that led to the arrest of a suspected hijacker,” said Maharaj-Marie.
