Faith in Ballito’s crime fighting abilities was restored to a group of Cape Town runners who were staying in Ballito for the Comrades Marathon, after a stolen cell phone and wallet were recovered on Monday with help from a local security company.
Wilna van der Westhuizen said she and a group of 12 people had booked into a guest house in Ballito where her daughter’s cell phone and wallet were stolen on Sunday evening.
“We were having a braai at the back of the house and someone left the front door open.
“The thief had gone into my daughter’s room and taken her belongings.”
Van der Westhuizen said a man named Neville called on Monday after he claimed to have picked up her sister’s phone cover and licence on Compensation Beach Road.
“It just did not make sense how he had our number without the phone.”
“The stolen iPhone was on 1 per cent battery life but when we tracked the phone, we found out that it had been charged.
“We tracked the phone to Patricia Road in Ballito.”
While the group searched for help, they approached Leon Rajcoomar from Mega Force Security who was patrolling the area at the time.
“He immediately offered us a ride and contacted his back-up.
“We managed to get access to the premises where Neville had been staying and he was arrested.”
Rajcoomar said the thief was taken to the police station and the stolen cell phone and a wallet were recovered from his house.
Westhuizen thanked Rajcoomar for his help and praised his work ethic.
“He is really an asset to his company and a hero for his effort in fighting crime in the area.”
