A 40-year-old Mandeni man should spend the next three decades behind bars after being sentenced for rape by the KwaDukuza Regional Court last week.
The man reportedly raped his 25-year-old mentally disabled niece while she was staying with him and his wife in the Hlomendlini area in Newark near Mandeni in 2012.
She did not report the matter to anyone until her family discovered she was pregnant.
When family members questioned this she explained that her uncle had impregnated her.
A case of rape was opened at Newark police station before the KwaDukuza Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit took over the investigation which led to the arrest of the man.
He was positively linked by means of DNA and was successfully convicted and sentenced to 30 years imprisonment.
The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa welcomed the sentence handed down to the accused
“This will send a strong message to the would-be rapists who think of committing such crimes.
“We are putting extra efforts commitments when dealing with such crimes against women and children,” he said.
