Severely damaged decomposing body found in Tongaat

A terrible stench led to a gruesome discovery behind Watson Park stadium in Tongaat yesterday

Just before midday yesterday (Tuesday) a decomposing body was discovered near the R102 in Tongaat.

According to Ismail Mitha, chairman of Emergency Control SA, the body was found on the gravel road near the railway line behind the Watson Park stadium.

Despite early reports that the body had been mutilated (the head and left leg cut off and chest cut open) officials now believe the victim was hit by a train.

“His head had extensive damage but was not completely severed and at present there are no indications that this was a murder and no foul play is suspected.”

The body was discovered due to the stench arising from it and appeared to be in the late stages of decomposition.

Unfortunately due to the damage to the body and the decomposition, emergency workers were unable to determine the sex or identity of the victim.

The matter was referred to Tongaat SAPS for further investigation.
