Man escapes attempted hijacking on R102, Stanger

Two weeks ago a similar incident took place in Ballito where a man was hijacked by three armed men on the M4, Ballito.

A New Guelderland resident made a lucky escape this morning after an attempted hijacking on the R102 near Prince’s Grant went wrong.

As Marian Pillay approached the speed humps on the R102 in Stanger while on his way to work early this morning, two men approached his vehicle and tried to open the doors.

Luckily for Pillay his car doors were locked and he managed to speed off.

His girlfriend, Nireshin Maharaj said they were both shaken up by the incident and that this was the first time she had heard of something like this happening at this intersection.

Two weeks ago a similar incident took place in Ballito where a man was reportedly hijacked by three armed men on the M4, Ballito and taken to Inanda, Durban on Monday night.

The Seaward Estate resident had been out driving his new car at around 8pm when three men jumped into his vehicle. They pointed a gun at him, put a plastic bag over his head and ordered him to get into the back seat of his car.

He was dropped off in Inanda and helped by another unknown man.

KwaDukuza SAPS spokesperson, constable Sibusiso Khuzwayo confirmed that the police had not previously had reports of attempted hijackings at that specific intersection.

He urged the public to always keep their doors locked and windows closed when approaching speed humps, stop signs and traffic lights.

“Criminals often hang around speed humps looking for potential victims.

“Even if you want to give someone a lift, you should not stop right next to speed humps. Stop a short distance away instead.

“This will allow you to see if he or she has company or if you decide to change your mind, you can drive off before they arrive at your car,” said Khuzwayo.
