A Maphumulo SAPS officer has been killed after being shot in the chest during what appears to have been an armed robbery this afternoon (Friday).
According to Umhlali SAPS spokesperson captain Vinny Pillay, captain Mhlanzi, who was off duty at the time, was at Maphumulo SPAR when an armed robbery reportedly took place. He suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.

Details surrounding the shooting are still to be confirmed. According to unconfirmed reports Mhlanzi may have been shot intentionally.
Paramedics arrived to find the captain in a critical condition. He soon succumbed to his injuries.
