UPDATE: Police killers’ getaway vehicle found

Was this an armed robbery or a hit on the off-duty captain?

The white Toyota used as a getaway vehicle in an alleged armed robbery at Maphumulo Spar yesterday (Friday) was found overturned in the Matimatolo area, west of Maphumulo, late last night.

Five men sped off in the vehicle after injuring a child and fatally shooting off-duty Maphumulo policeman, captain Mhlanzi (55), who had made his way to Spar from the Kwawoza Court, to deposit money.

The shooting occurred during an armed robbery, in which a number of customers’ cellphones were taken.

However Ilembe cluster spokesperson constable Sibusiso Khuzwayo said it was not clear whether this was a robbery or if the robbers used it to orchestrate the murder of the policeman.

Mhlanzi died on his way to Umphumulo Hospital and the child was treated and released yesterday.

“Anyone with information leading to the apprehension of these suspects may come forward and anonymously inform Maphumulo SAPS,” said Khuzwayo.
