KwaDukuza police under siege amid witchcraft allegations

Police said they will not tolerate anyone taking the law into their own hands.

A mob of close to 150 Tshawini residents protested outside KwaDukuza police station, and closed the R102 with burning tyres, trees and rubbish skips on Monday and Tuesday night.

Last night the police reportedly fired warning shots as the crowd threatened to enter the police station by force.

Four people were arrested for public violence.

They were demanding the release of a man arrested in connection with the attempted murder of a 56-year-old sangoma, who was almost burnt alive for “witchcraft”.

The sangoma is accused of killing a 12-year-old child.

Apparently the child died calling the Sangoma’s name, saying “I don’t want to come with you,” which was taken as a sign that the boy’s soul had been captured by the sangoma.

It is reported that the boy died on the way to a traditional healer who was asked to rescue him.

After the incident, the community burnt the sangoma’s house and five cars that were parked in her yard.

A case of attempted murder was opened at KwaDukuza police station and on Monday a man was arrested.

The Courier visited the family of the sangoma on Tuesday morning but they declined to comment.

KwaDukuza police spokesperson constable Sibusiso Khuzwayo said police would not tolerate anyone taking the law into their own hands.

The R102 is still closed.
