Five appear in court for murder of homeless man – Maphumulo

The five accused claim that the victims were responsible for crime in the area.

An investigation into the murder of a homeless man and the attempted murder of another in Maphumulo in April led to the recent arrest of five suspects.

The five accused, aged between 19 and 42 years, appeared in Maphumulo Magistrate’s Court last week and were remanded in custody until 23 May for a formal bail application.

It is alleged that on 29 April at about 4pm, Sanele Maphumulo (27) and his friend were severely assaulted by a group of men in Appelsbosch, accusing them of criminal activities in the area.

They were taken to hospital for medical attention where Maphumulo later died from his injuries.

Cases of murder and attempted murder was opened at Nsuze police station, which later resulted in the five arrests.

The five accused claim that the victims were responsible for crime in the Nsuze policing precinct, however there are no cases reported against them.
