“In the early hours of this morning police officers from the provincial task team, special task force and K9 unit followed up on intelligence with regards to the suspects involved in the armed robbery at Ballito,” said KZN SAPS spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele.
“The police officers approached a house at Piesang River in Inanda, when the suspects opened fire at them.
“Two suspects were fatally wounded during the exchange of gunfire.
“Two unlicensed firearms and ammunition were seized from the deceased suspects.”
She said the investigation into the armed robbery continues and attempts are underway to trace and arrest the remaining robbers.
“The firearms will be subjected to ballistic tests to establish if they were used in the commission of any crimes in the country.”
There were reportedly three staff members and two customers, with their child, at the store when the hold-up took place.
