An elderly Mandeni couple were brutally attacked in their home on Monday evening, stabbed and shoved through a glass table – for a cellphone.
According to Mandeni Sector Policing Forum vice chairman Darren Nisbet, the attack occurred at around 7.40pm in the evening at the home on Trogon Road.
“The elderly gentleman spotted someone in their yard and went out to investigate,” Nisbet told the Courier.
“The man he saw ran away, but we suspect there were two criminals as – when he turned back – there was already another man in the house.”
The as yet unnamed man, who is in his late 70s, was stabbed multiple times while his wife was brutally kicked in the ribs and shoved through a glass coffee table.
The attackers then ran away, leaving the couple bleeding on the floor, with only a cellphone to show for their trouble.

Nisbet said after the attackers left, the lady managed to call for help.
“I was the first responder at the home and I rushed in to help. I immediately started first aid on the gentlemen as he was bleeding profusely. There was just blood everywhere.”
The man was rushed to Stanger Hospital where he is being treated for his wounds. Fortunately, said Nisbet, it appears he will pull through.
Nisbet said the attacker with the knife was described as young, short and very aggressive.
“At the moment it seems possible that this was a drug-related crime, where an addict was looking for things to steal to feed his addiction.”
The stolen cell phone was tracked to the Nyoni area before it was switched off.
