Agric manager chased by hijackers on Glendale road – Umhlali

The experience brought back harrowing memories of a farm attack in 2014 on the same road.

Escorting a cane loader on the Glendale road this morning, local man Dean Gillitt believes he was targeted by hijackers.

Gillitt (57), general manager for the Robert agricultural management company, said he was driving behind the cane loader at the speed bumps near Etete Primary School on the Glendale road when he saw five men with a grey Isuzu double cab parked on the road.

“I knew there was something wrong so I did not stop. As I drove past I saw them quickly jumping into the van.

“Before I knew it, the van was after me and they kept on flashing lights but I did not stop.”

He took the Isinembe turn off when he realised that one of the men was pointing a gun straight at him.

“I kept on driving not allowing them to overtake me and we kept on changing lanes.

“I am grateful there was no oncoming traffic because there would have been a very bad accident.”

The men gave up the chase and took a side road by the power station.

“My wife and I were involved in a farm attack in 2014 on Thulele Farm on that same Glendale road. My wife was shot and I was shot at.

“This bought back vivid memories of that day. Not pleasant we have to live in our country in such circumstances”

He reported the incident to Umhlali police.
