Upper Tongaat lift club driver killed outside high school

The shooting is suspected to be linked to tensions between taxis and private lift operations.

A man running a lift club transporting school pupils was shot and killed outside Esenembe Secondary School, in Upper Tongaat this afternoon.

A source from Umhlali SAPS said the incident was suspected to have been taxi related.

“We had a report that multiple gun shots were fired and when we arrived, one victim was found dead.

“Tensions have been high between taxis and private operations because these drivers are seen as competition.”

IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst said the driver in his late fifties was declared dead by a local doctor.

“School was not out yet and the man was waiting in his car when he was shot in the head,” said Herbst.
