Bullets fly as police nab two for hijacking at Darnall
The men were intercepted at Nsiwa Reserve and arrested after an exchange of bullets.
Police on Monday arrested two alleged hijackers who had earlier that day robbed a man of his vehicle on the R102 at Darnall.
According to provincial Saps spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala, the driver of the vehicle was travelling between Mandeni and KwaDukuza when a vehicle pulled over in front of him, forcing him to a stop.
“Three men alighted from the vehicle and robbed the man of his car at gunpoint,” said Captain Gwala.
Both private security and police were notified and gave pursuit.
The vehicles were spotted at a sugarcane field in Newark where police say the hijackers were in the process of swapping vehicle registration plates.
“The suspects continued on the R102 northbound and were intercepted at Nsiwa Reserve,” said Captain Gwala, who said a shootout ensued.
Nobody was injured in the exchange of gunfire and two men were arrested.
They were found in possession of 14 rounds of ammunition, a firearm and a toy gun. The stolen bakkie was also recovered.
The men are expected to appear in court later this week.
KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Khombinkosi Jula praised the teamwork which led to the arrests.
