Con man threatens KwaDukuza residents with arrest if they do not pay fines for breaking lockdown rules

KwaDukuza Saps will never Whatsapp any member of the public in regards to an arrest or fine.

A scam artist is attempting to extort money from KwaDukuza residents for allegedly breaking the Covid-19 Disaster Management Act.

Under the guise of a police officer, a person calling themselves Captain Selvin Gounden has contacted numerous people and asked them to pay a fine or face arrest.

KwaDukuza Saps spokesperson Priya Nunkumar said a number of people had reported the scam to the station.

”He has a fake persal number* and is not employed by KwaDukuza Saps.

“He has been messaging victims using the following number: 064 984 7807.”

KwaDukuza Saps will never Whatsapp any member of the public in regards to an arrest or fine, or request members of the public to pay money to avoid an arrest, said Nunkumar

“Kindly block the number immediately if you are messaged,” she said, adding that the fake WhatsApp account had been deleted by the scammer.
