Stanger Manor resident and Eskom employee Stephen Naidoo was hospitalised on Monday night after he was attacked by intruders.
Naidoo (53), who is well known for providing timeous loadshedding updates for KwaDukuza residents, was hit in the throat by a thrown rock and suffered open lacerations, a fractured thyroid bone and severe soft tissue injuries to the throat.
Naidoo had heard family members shouting for help from his garden and rushed out armed with a baseball bat.
“A 2-metre section of razor wire had been removed already, but I could not immediately see the intruders,” said Naidoo.
As he approached the boundary wall, 3 men stood up from behind the wall and one hurled a rock at him.
“Due to my disabilities of poor vision and spine operations, I could not duck out of the way in time.”
This was the second attempted robbery of his home in 2 weeks despite Naidoo having CCTV security and dogs on his property.
A CT scan shows that the left vocal cord was not functioning and was badly bruised and bloody. Naidoo said he was recovering well and would hopefully regain his voice completely.
Naidoo said he had received a great many well wishes from residents.
“I want to express my sincere heartfelt thanks and appreciation to everyone on the WhatsApp groups and Facebook for their good wishes.
“It made me realize how much people appreciate my loadshedding updates and information on power outages.”
He was discharged on Thursday to recover at home.
