Protest action continues around KZN overnight

A truck was set alight at Nqobheni Stop in Ntshawini.

Protest action has continued around KwaZulu-Natal following the judgment yesterday morning confirming former president Jacob Zuma’s 15 month prison stay.

An appeal for rescission was turned down by Pietermaritzburg High Court judge, Jerome Mnguni and the former president remains in custody at Estcourt correctional centre.

In response, pro-Zuma protesters have continued to target major traffic routes around the province with wide circulation of shutdown notices on social media.

The North Coast has been relatively untouched overnight, although there is still only one lane in use on the R102 from Ntshawini to Melville given the debris from protests yesterday afternoon.

KwaDukuza saps spokesperson, Priya Nunkumar also confirmed that a truck was burnt overnight at Nqobheni Stop in the Ntshawini area.

Further north, traffic is blocked following the burning of 6 trucks on the N2 northbound between Mtabutaba and Hluhluwe at Mfekayi, said Umhlali saps spokesperson, Vinny Pillay.

A further 2 trucks were burnt at Gingindlovu and traffic is currently halted, he said.

Towards Durban, protest action has been reported at Spaghetti Junction with burning tires reported on the M19 from Springfield to Pinetown.

Umgeni road towards Connaught bridge has been similarly blocked, per TrafficSA reports.

Further south, roads have been blocked with tires at Amanzimtoti (opposite Galleria Mall) and Umgababa.

Inland, 5 trucks were burnt at the Mooi River Toll Plaza in the early hours of this morning and traffic remains unmoving in the area.

Motorists are urged to limit their travel where possible.
