KwaZulu-Natal continues to be the epicentre of sparse nationwide protests against the incarceration of former president Jacob Zuma.

Scattered protests across the province continued overnight, with most of the North Coast seeing very light activity.

Trees blocked the R102 south of Darnall overnight but they have since been removed, said KwaDukuza saps spokesperson, Priya Nunkumar.

Protest action on the N2 further north is still ongoing between Mtubatuba and Hluhluwe, but the road is open, said Umhlali saps spokesperson, Vinny Pillay.

The N2 from Empangeni to Gingindlovu is also open, he said.

In Durban, Mountbatten Road north of the M19 in Reservoir Hills is seeing active protests.

The road has been opened per East Coast Radio (ECR) Traffic but motorists are still urged to avoid the area.

Smithfield Road in Kenville is seeing similar protests and authorities are on scene, per ECR Traffic.

Inland, the N3 at Mooi River has been opened in both directions, but there is a large backlog of traffic so expect delays if you are traveling on that route.

KZN Premier, Sihle Zikalala called on protesters to avoid property damage and to remain peaceful.

“We are fully conscious of the anger of the community but unfortunately, violence and destruction often affects and attacks people who are not involved”, he said.

Spokesperson for President Cyril Ramaphosa, Tyrone Seale struck a similar tone,

“The President says the impact of violence against the road freight industry and the damage to freeways that service economic arteries will be felt also by the people organising and committing these crimes.”

So far 27 arrests have been made across the province.
