Teen arrested for murder of Malawian national who house-sat for friend at Glendale

He took a blow to the head with a hammer and was stabbed multiple times. Blaki's murder angered Glendale residents, who accused police of not doing their jobs.

A 16-year-old boy is one of 3 people who was arrested last Thursday for the murder of a foreign national in Glendale.

The arrest comes after a community meeting with police on Sunday, September 12, regarding the murder of Patrick Blaki (28).

Blaki, a Malawian cane cutter, had been house-sitting for a friend when he was murdered on Saturday, August 21.

He took a blow to the head with a hammer and was stabbed multiple times. Blaki’s murder angered Glendale residents, who accused police of not doing their jobs.

This was the third time Kopi Mtshali’s home had been broken into with no arrests.

Mtshali said she was relieved that the meeting had yielded results and praised the detective investigating the case.

“He constantly gave me updates on any developments until an arrest was made. I hope the court will find them guilty so that justice can be served for my friend, who left a 7-year-old girl behind,” said Mtshali.

Glendale police spokesperson sergeant Nhlaliyenza Mahlobo thanked Glendale residents for working with the police and not taking the law into their own hands.

“Two of the arrested are Glendale residents and one is from Groutville. They appeared at the KwaDukuza Magistrate Court on Monday and are still in custody,” said Mahlobo.

The accused will appear again on October 28.
