Ex-Shaka’s Head ANC councilor shot while canvassing for upcoming elections

Jetro Banda was ousted from his position as Ward 4 councilor in 2016 after violent protests rocked the township over demands that he be removed.

The African National Congress’ Ward 4 candidate in KwaDukuza was shot on Saturday while doing door-to-door canvassing for the upcoming local government elections in Shaka’s Head.

Two unknown men opened fire on Jetro Banda and a unidentified man, injuring both, said police.

Banda was rushed to Netcare Alberlito and later moved to another hospital where he remains.

Provincial Saps spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala said no arrests had been made but cases of attempted murder had been opened at Umhlali Saps.

Previously the Shaka’s Head councilor from 1996 to 2016, Banda was ousted after violent protests rocked the township over demands that he be removed.

Banda was replaced by ANC member Mlamuli Ndlela with the ANC retaining the ward that year.

Ward 4 ANC cllr Mlamuli Ndlela.

Ndlela remains the ward 4 councilor until his term comes to an end.

KwaZulu-Natal ANC spokesperson, Nhlakanipho Ntombela said Banda had been reselected through a community-inclusive process.

“He is currently recovering in hospital and is doing well,” said Ntombela.
