Security guard arrested in Capitec murder case out on bail

The 40-year-old security guard is facing murder charges after he allegedly assaulted the 29-year-old upcoming musician two weeks ago.

The security guard who was arrested for the alleged murder of a Tongaat resident at Capitec bank was released on bail today.

Tongaat police spokesperson captain Patrick Ngwane said the man appeared before Verulam Magistrate Court and was released on bail of R2500.

The 40-year-old security guard is facing murder charges after he allegedly assaulted an upcoming musician Nhlakanipho Gumede two weeks ago.

Gumede was left bleeding on the pavement outside Capitec after allegedly accusing the bank of theft. He later died in hospital.

The 29-year-old went to the Tongaat branch on Saturday, October 30, reportedly to make enquiries after half the money he had deposited for his family in northern KZN the day prior, had gone missing.

He was worried that the money had been stolen and did not want his family to think he had pocketed the money for himself.

He had deposited R1 000 for his family in Ngwavuma but they had only received R500.

“He was told he must return on Tuesday because the person who had assisted him was off duty. He asked the manager to give a written confirmation that it was the bank’s fault. That’s when an argument broke out between him and the manager,” said his bother, Jan Gumede.

Security guards were called and allegedly assaulted him. Capitec is conducting an internal investigation into the matter.

“Once the investigation is complete, the findings will lead us to the next step in the matter. In the meantime, we are closely in contact with the family of the deceased,” said Capitec.
