Angry mob burns down home of Nkobongo teen accused of murder

The boy later handed himself over to the police.

A teenager who allegedly stabbed and killed another teen faced the wrath of Nkobongo residents, who in retribution set his family’s home alight on Saturday.

Councillor Ali Ngidi said the boy later handed himself over to the police.

“After stabbing the other boy, he ran into his house, but by the time angry community members arrived he had already fled.

“Unaware that he had done so, the residents set the house on fire to get hold of him,” said Ngidi.

He said it was painful to see an innocent family being harassed and have their house burnt down because of the young teen’s actions.

In November the Courier reported that the Nkobongo and Shayamoya townships were problem areas relating to murder, robbery and house break-ins.

“Surprisingly, during the festive season it was quiet and we thought everything was returning to normal, now this tragic incident,” said Ngidi.

Drug abuse, gang fights and illegal taverns operating at irregular hours are cited as the main causes of last year’s crime spike, said Ngidi and councillors Collen Mdletshe and Doeshiee Govender.
