A security company manager was shot and killed in a robbery at the Gwalas Farm informal settlement, Tongaat, on Monday.
According to police, Poobalan “June” Govender, who worked for Eagle Eye Protection Services, was attacked and shot in his car by three unknown gunmen while he was paying security guards.
The suspects robbed him of his firearm, 17 rounds of ammunition as well as cash before fleeing the scene on foot.
However, Shoorbeer Maharaj of Eagle Eye Protection Services denied Govender was paying security guards, but was rather at the scene to pick up staff members.
“We are unsure as to what exactly happened, but he was a God-loving person always willing to help.
He worked for the company for eight years, starting off as a guard and ending up as a manager,” said Maharaj. Police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, urged residents and employers not to carry large amounts of cash.
“They must consider safer options, such as transferring money or salary into the bank accounts to avoid becoming victims of crime.”
Govender was not the first guard to be killed in Tongaat and his firearm taken.
Last year in July a security guard was shot and killed in Emona while guarding a reservoir and his gun was taken.
In 2020 at least two guards were murdered.
