Police foiled an attempted robbery at a supermarket in Bhamshela yesterday, killing one of the alleged robbers in a shoot-out in front of the store.
This was the second attempt on a Boxer Superstore that day.
The first being in Sundumbili, Mandeni at around 5am.
Thanks to information received, police were lying in wait for the gang, who arrived at a shopping centre in Bhamshela armed to the teeth on Monday morning around 9am.
“Police officers from the national intervention unit, supported by local police, were summoned to the location. A group of heavily armed men were spotted arriving in two vehicles.
“The men entered the shopping centre and a shoot-out ensued. One of the suspects – a man in his thirties – was fatally wounded and another suspect (35) was wounded,” said Saps spokesperson lieutenant-colonel Nqobile Gwala.

Police also arrested a 58-year-old man armed with a revolver.
“The deceased was found in possession of a pistol and ammunition. Cases of attempted robbery, attempted murder, as well as unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition have been opened for investigation,” said Gwala.
