Three arrested in Stanger for possession of unlicensed firearms and microwaves stolen in Durban hijacking

The hijacked container containing 108 microwave ovens arrived at the Durban harbour from Malaysia.

Three people were arrested in Darnall and Stanger last Friday for allegedly being in possession of more than 100 microwaves stolen during a recent hijacking in Durban.

The hijacked container containing 108 microwave ovens arrived at the Durban harbour from Malaysia.

Apart from the microwaves, 82 truck tyres and counterfeit face creams were also recovered in a shop in Stanger.

The total value of the goods is R1.5-million.

KwaDukuza Saps spokesperson, constable Siphesihle Myeni, said the joint operation was conducted by police and security companies.

“Tip-offs led the teams to Darnall where two suspects aged 24 and 56 were arrested. Further investigations then led police to a Stanger store where another suspect, aged 49, was arrested,” said Myeni.

Among the stolen goods recovered were 108 microwaves.

Apart from being in possession of the stolen goods, the Stanger man was also found in possession of two unlicensed firearms, an unlicensed assault rifle, 30 live rounds of ammunition and an Isuzu truck.

“The suspects will appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court soon,” Myeni said.

KwaDukuza mayor Lindile Nhaca welcomed the swift recovery of the stolen goods and arrests and commended the good work of the various law enforcement agencies.

“I call on the public to work with law enforcement agencies by reporting any suspicious criminal activities taking place in their business and residential areas.”
