Second scrapyard raided in Shakaskraal following arrest of councillor’s son

On Monday, a man was apprehended by Marshall Security while trying to steal a cable in Salt Rock and he was handed over to Umhlali Saps.

An alleged illegal scrapyard manager, Sherwin Ramlakan, was arrested in Shakaskraal on Saturday after allegedly stolen cables valued at about R1.2-million were found on the premises.

The 27-year-old was taken into custody when police and officials from Telkom, MTN, Transnet and Prasa entered his scrapyard and found aluminum cables weighing 492.6kg and burnt copper weighing 134kg.

The business is next door to the one where three men, including the Shakaskraal councillor’s son, were arrested last week for possession of copper cables and cell phone tower batteries with an estimated value of R1-million.

Ramlakan appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was remanded in custody until the following Monday for a formal bail application.

Police had not responded at the time of going to print.
