KwaDukuza mayor vows to mobilise police in wake of brutal murders

A taxi boss was killed in cold blood on Monday, the most recent in an alarming number of murders.

A spate of murder cases in the North Coast area are causing serious concern.

Three people were murdered in Tongaat on Sunday and Monday.

A 45-year-old taxi owner of the Isiqalokuhle Taxi Association was killed in a drive-by shooting on Monday morning.

He was travelling on the R102 when he was allegedly shot by gunmen in a vehicle which overtook him at the Walter Reid traffic lights in Tongaat

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala, said the victim was hit multiple times and was certified dead at the scene. Police are investigating.

Two people aged 27 and 28 were shot and killed on Sunday and their friend seriously wounded in Emona.

Police are investigating a case of murder, carjacking and attempted murder. In this incident, a VW Polo was taken by the attackers.

A man was stabbed and killed at a petrol station in Westbrook on Saturday.

Two more people were killed in Nkobongo and one in Shayamoya at the weekend.

Meanwhile, KwaDukuza mayor Lindile Nhaca attended a prayer meeting against violence in Driefontein on Saturday after the brutal murders of five people last month.

“We are disturbed and deeply concerned about the recent senseless killings, including a woman who was allegedly stabbed to death.

“What concerns us the most is that these criminals are still at large. We will be broadening our focus and reach to ensure that we open a new chapter of peace in the area,” said Nhaca.

It is reported that a number of illicit taverns operate in the area which contributes to the escalation of violence.

“We will come down hard on illicit taverns and shebeens which do not comply with the law.

“I will mobilise the Umhlali police and KwaDukuza Crime Prevention to patrol regularly as part of ensuring police visibility.

“This will be coupled with the launch of local street committees so that every community member can have a role to play in combatting crime in our area,” said the mayor.
