Umhlali police continue hunt for escaped prisoner
While one escapee, Brandon Moodley, has been re-arrested on Sunday, Ntando Makhanya remains at large after the duo's escape from Umhlali Saps' holding cells.
Two men escaped from the exercise yard at Umhlali police station’s holding cells on Saturday, and one remains at large.
Ntando Makhanya (28) was arrested on August 23, and faced charges of possession of stolen property, among others.
Brandon Moodley (29) was originally arrested on August 29 and faced charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, and damage to property.
They allegedly escaped through a hole that had been cut in the fence the night prior.
Moodley was re-arrested in Shakaskraal on Sunday, allegedly at his in-law’s house.
Police spokesperson, Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, said Moodley was first traced to Phoenix.
“Information was received that he was travelling to Shakaskraal. An operation was set up and the wanted suspect was re-arrested and detained at Umhlali Saps.”
It is alleged that his car, a blue golf, was reported stolen.
The guardian of the car had not opened a case, even though the car was taken from his premises.
Moodley appeared in court on Monday and was remanded to Westville prison.
“Police are still on the lookout for Makhanya and we request anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact the police at 08600 10111,” said Ngcobo.
