Security officers escape serious injury in R102 cash-in-transit heist near Mandeni

The R102 is currently closed in both directions between Mandeni and Gingindlovu.

A group of cash-in-transit officers were lucky to escape with their lives after being fired on in a brazen robbery this afternoon.

The cash-in-transit (CIT) heist happened on the R102 between Mandeni and Gingindlovu just after 4pm.

Reports indicate that the armed robbers first forced the escort car off the road, before tackling the CIT van.

They used explosives to gain entry to the van and escaped with an undisclosed amount of money.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson, Samantha Meyrick, the men in the escort vehicle were treated for minor injuries.

The R102 was closed in both directions at time of publication, to allow for police investigation and crime scene clearing.
