A 104-year-old Hlomendlini resident received an unforgettable birthday surprise when Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) officials from Mandeni arrived at her home with gifts during voter registration weekend.
The visit formed part of the IEC’s commitment to serving communities beyond election periods while ensuring that elderly residents remain registered to vote.
The IEC team surprised Gogo Shongwe with a birthday cake, drinks, food and cash that they had collected.
As it was the final day of the voter registration weekend, officials also registered the centenarian at her home, ensuring she remains on the voters’ roll and will be able to exercise her democratic right in future elections.
The thoughtful gesture left Shongwe emotional and grateful and she blessed the officials, wishing them well in their personal lives and work.
Shongwe lives with her daughter, granddaughters and great-granddaughters.
