Illegal gambling machines seized in Ndwedwe and Bhamshela

Unlicensed machines are often found in tuck-shops, liquor outlets and other informal businesses, making them easily accessible to members of the public, including minors.

Twenty-seven illegal gambling machines carrying almost R29 000 were seized in a police crackdown in Ndwedwe, Bhamshela and other areas last week.

A series of raids by the KwaZulu-Natal Economic Regulatory Authority (KZNERA), in conjunction with police, targeted tuck shops, liquor outlets and informal businesses.

According to KZNERA interim CEO, Portia Baloyi, the danger in unlicensed machines lies in their lack of oversight.

“This raises serious concerns, as gambling should only take place in regulated environments where strict measures are in place to prevent underage participation and ensure fair play,” said Baloyi.

Baloyi also added that these illegal gambling operations exposed communities to unfair gaming practices and flouted legislation to protect gamblers.

Cash seized from the illegal gambling machines.

“Illegal gambling machines do not comply with industry standards, meaning there are no consumer protections, and participants have no guarantees of fair winnings,” she said.

“Additionally, these operations divert funds away from the regulated sector, which contributes to economic development and responsible gaming initiatives.”
