Surge in SUV theft in Ballito and Salt Rock sparks community action
At least five Fortuners have been stolen since the beginning of June.
A surge in vehicle thefts has prompted Salt Rock Neighbourhood Watch (SRNW) to take action, commissioning a private risk assessment to improve security at key local sites.
At least five Fortuners have been stolen in Ballito and Salt Rock – one from Salt Rock main beach – since the beginning of June with two additional attempted thefts.
SRNW chairperson André Mostert confirmed that the aim of the assessment was to assist residents and local businesses strengthen their security measures.
“We have also offered to assist with training of security guards. These are some of the proactive measures we are taking to help curb crime in our community,” said Mostert, who urged residents to remain vigilant and prioritise vehicle security.
“I believe the recent incidents involved opportunistic criminals taking advantage of the holiday season. While there is no need for panic, vehicle security should always be a top priority,” he said.
Ballito Neighbourhood Watch chairperson Morné Steffens said Fortuners had become a clear target.
“The syndicate’s modus operandi appears to involve removing the front passenger window to gain access,” he said.
This entry method was used in two attempted thefts of vehicles parked at local beaches.
