Toddler found beside mother’s body after fatal Ntshawini attack

Her throat had been slit and a knife was still lodged in her neck.

The Ntshawini community was left in shock last week after a 31-year-old woman was found dead in a pool of blood, with her two-year-old child crying beside her.

The victim, Nqobile Mthethwa, was discovered in a rented room last Tuesday. Her throat had been slit and a knife was still lodged in her neck.

Neighbours reported hearing cries for help moments before the room fell silent. A witness said someone was seen leaving the scene shortly afterwards.

Police have confirmed that a suspect later handed himself over to authorities and was charged with murder. He has since appeared in court and was remanded in custody. A bail application is expected to be heard on Thursday.

Family members said the scene was traumatic and would leave lasting scars.

“My sister was lying lifeless in a pool of blood. What tore me apart even more was seeing her son sitting beside her, calling her name,” said Sboniso Mthethwa, her brother.

While the motive remains under investigation, the family believes jealousy may have played a role.

Nqobile was described as a devoted mother who was trying to make ends meet while unemployed. According to relatives, she had been helping a neighbour with laundry work for a small fee.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with additional information is urged to contact the iLembe police.
