Chess coaching leads to explosion in popularity of the sport at Shakaskraal Primary
Pupils involved willingly give up half an hour of their lunch break to play, with an additional training session offered before the school day starts.
Chess is booming at Shakaskraal Primary School, where a development programme has grown from 14 to 46 players in just a few months.
The growth follows the North Coast Chess Club’s decision to fund a term of coaching at the school, led by coach Prince Mthembu.
Pupils involved willingly give up half an hour of their lunch break to play, with an additional training session offered before the school day starts.
The dedicated group recently received another boost when the D&D Chess Association donated 30 chess boards to the school, supporting the continued growth of the programme. Coach Mthembu will also remain for another term thanks to a donation from the Coastal Farmers Co-Op.
While there are now enough boards, the school still needs more chess pieces. Anyone able to assist can contact the North Coast Chess Club at 082 455 3098.
