Fatal KwaDukuza shooting caps violent week across North Coast

Three separate shootings in days leave one dead and several injured.

A fatal shooting at the KwaDukuza off-ramp capped a violent week of gun attacks across the North Coast.
The latest incident occurred on Sunday, where 59-year-old Thembelihle Masuku was shot dead while sitting in her vehicle.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Kelsey-Jae Meyrick, paramedics found Masuku in the driver’s seat with multiple gunshot wounds. She was declared dead at the scene.

Her adult daughter, who was travelling with her, escaped with minor injuries.

KwaDukuza Saps has opened a murder case.

On Friday, a father and son were shot in the Mandeni policing precinct during an alleged dispute with their neighbour.

Meyrick said both men suffered gunshot wounds to their legs and were stabilised before being transported to hospital. The alleged shooter was later found at his home after reportedly attempting suicide and was also taken to hospital.

Police arrested the 60-year-old suspect, who allegedly entered the victims’ home, confronted them and used a firearm licensed to his elderly father to shoot the 58-year-old father and his 29-year-old son in the legs. The firearm was seized for ballistic testing.

The suspect has been charged with attempted murder and is expected to appear in the Nyoni Magistrate’s Court once discharged from hospital.

In a separate incident on Hulett Street, a man was shot and injured, allegedly by the owner of a security company.

It is understood the man was at a doctor’s surgery when an argument broke out. Security personnel were called, and the confrontation allegedly escalated into a physical altercation before the shooting.
Police had not responded to queries about the incident by the time of publication.
