UPDATE: A night of flames in Isithebe as protesters fling petrol bombs

Protesters are back in destructive mode in Isithebe and fire fighters are trying to douse the flaming Distinctive Choice factory.

Distinctive Choice factory in Yellow Street,  Isithebe has been petrol bombed and fire fighters are battling the flames.

The factory employs more than 2000 people.

Courier journalist Sboniso Dlamini, reporting from Isithebe, said police were expecting a rough night.

Earlier, protesters started petrol bombing a factory but were stopped and police shot one of the men in the leg. He managed to leave the scene according to an unconfirmed report.

“Protesters are also planning to set alight the Sithebe Clinic tonight,” Dlamini said.

“I was told by a police officer that they were informed petrol bombs were ready for use tonight. So we should expect a night of flames.

“The community is not happy with the service they get from the clinic a resident told me,” Dlamini said.

Dylan Meyrick from IPSS security said earlier: “Crowds have broken into smaller groups throughout Isithebe. We will have problems all night. Red Street is already blocked.”

After the failed meeting today, protesters threw stones at the riot police who retaliated by firing rubber bullets and set off smoke bombs and tear gas.

Protesters have blocked roads again.

Avoid the area.
