DA candidate promises action on key issues in Ballito by-election
The other political parties to contest have yet to reveal their candidates.

The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) candidate for the upcoming Ballito Ward 6 by-election, Ayabonga Zwane, has highlighted key local issues he plans to address if elected.
Zwane (32) has identified public drinking, street lighting and potholes as some of the issues that need to be prioritised. He also acknowledges the importance of tackling crime and is eager to collaborate with stakeholders to enhance service delivery in the community.
“There are other major issues, such as electricity. It is encouraging to see the work done by different role players in addressing our day-to-day challenges, and it will be a pleasure to work hand in hand with them,” said Zwane.
The by-election, set for September 11, follows the promotion of former Ward 6 councillor Tammy Colley to the provincial legislature after the national elections in May.
Zwane, a long-time resident of Ballito, has been an active DA member since 2021 and currently serves as the DA branch chairperson in Ballito.
He joined the party believing it offered the best platform for him to be the change-maker he aspires to be. If elected, Zwane would become the first black councillor for Ward 6. While this may present challenges, particularly in addressing perceptions that the DA is predominantly a party for white communities, Zwane is determined to let his work speak for itself. He is confident in his ability to meet the expectations of both the party and the residents.
“I will do my job to the best of my ability. If anyone focuses on the colour of my skin rather than the work I do, that will be their problem to deal with,” said Zwane.
The engaged father of a two-year-old boy, holds a diploma in agricultural management from Nelson Mandela University. Before settling in Ballito, he worked across the country in the agricultural sector. He has a diploma in agricultural management.
Colley said she has worked with Zwane for some time. She described him as hard-working, honest and committed to serving the community.
“Politics in South Africa is dynamic and ever-changing, and we need energetic and positive people who can bring fresh new changes to established norms. I believe Zwane will bring youthful enthusiasm to the challenging local government environment along with new ideas that will bring further positive changes that the community of Ward 6 deserve.”
While Action SA has said that they will not be contesting, other political parties have yet to reveal their candidates. They have until Monday, August 19, to enter the by-election.
