New R25-millon reservoir to strengthen water supply for growing Sheffield developments

The Taffeni Reservoir Expansion Project will add a new 2.5ML reservoir, increasing the site's total storage capacity from 5ML to 7.5ML.

A R25-millon reservoir expansion project is underway in Sheffield as Siza Water moves to strengthen water security with continued residential and commercial growth in the area.

The Taffeni Reservoir Expansion Project will add a new 2.5ML reservoir, increasing the site’s total storage capacity from 5ML to 7.5ML.

South African Water Works (SAWW) group managing director Shyam Misra said the project would improve the reliability and resilience of the potable water network as development continues.

Once completed, the expanded reservoir will support Seaton Estate, Lalela Estate, Sheffield Hills, Elaleni Estate, Zululami and Brettenwood, as well as the greater Sheffield area. It will also strengthen the network supplying Tinley Manor.

Speaking at the recent sod-turning ceremony, Misra said about 12 local jobs had already been created, with this expected to increase to about 20 during construction.

The project is also providing practical workplace training to three engineering students, while about R7-millon of the project value has been allocated to local small and emerging contractors.

iLembe District Municipality mayor Thobani Shandu said reliable water infrastructure was critical to attracting and retaining investment in the district.

He highlighted the impact water shortages can have on economic development and commended Siza Water for investing in infrastructure to improve water security.
