New classrooms for local schools

Eleven overcrowded local schools will receive new classrooms.

Soon overcrowded classrooms will be the thing of the past for 11 local schools which are set to get new buildings from the education department.

KwaDukuza’s Dinuphozo Primary, Stanger Manor Secondary and Stanger Training Centre are amongst the 11 Ilembe district schools identified by the provincial department as needing additional classrooms.

These joined dozens of schools around the KZN that are the first beneficiaries of the partnership between government and Coega Development Corporation (CDC).

CDC is one of the country’s leading infrastructure development agencies with a wide project portfolio in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, and now KZN.

Education spokesperson, Muzi Mahlambi said many schools suffer from a lack of infrastructure and the provincial government is investing heavily on providing new and upgraded classroom facilities especially in previously disadvantaged rural areas.

“Government alone can not solve the problems of school and classroom shortages in the province so we encourage the private sector to partner with us,” said Mahlambi.

National treasury allocated R76.7 billion for 2013/14 to the education departments of all nine provinces, most of the allocation will be spent on building new classrooms. Mahlambi said the KZN grant amounts to R15-billion and their budget expenditure includes the construction of new 2 000 classrooms.

CDC head of marketing and communications, Ayanda Vilakazi said, “Socio-economic development and transformation underpins the CDC. We have started building classrooms and schools in 12 of KZN districts including Pinetown, Zululand and Ilembe.”

Vilakazi said the size of CDC’s department of education projects had doubled since the previous financial year, from R444 million in 2011/12 to R846 million in 2012/13. This includes the building of 40 new schools.

Other local schools that are in line to get new classrooms are Dulini Primary, Guzana Secondary, Khululekani Primary, KwaVusumuzi High, New Impiyakubo Primary, Nokubusa Primary, Noodsberg Primary and Unyazi Primary.
