A man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after he stole a firearm off a policewoman while she was on duty, but allegedly sleeping.
The incident occurred at the Tongaat Police station last year. According to KZN SAPS spokes person Captain Thulani Zwane, the officer was sick and was on medication at the time.
Police were able to trace the man and arrested him a week later. It was alleged that the weapon had been used to commit another crime, but Zwane denied the claim.
“Ballistic tests have been done to confirm this,” he said.
The accused appeared in the KwaDukuza regional court.
A case of negligent use of a firearm has also been opened against the officer. The case is pending trial and is currently sub-judice.
The matter was originally brought to the North Coast Courier’s attention by a concerned resident in Tongaat. The resident wished to remain anonymous but voiced concerns.
“It is a huge concern that police officers are sleeping on duty. It is completely unacceptable,” the resident said.
