Surfers bring home the silverware

Local surfer girls Teal Hogg and Sophie Bell took top honours in their respective categories at the Hurley SA junior champs in Jeffrey’s Bay last weekend.

Crawford North Coast College student Teal won the U17 girl’s division title. She delivered a fantastic come-from-behind victory with a great ride in the last seconds of the competition to overtake Eastern Cape’s Robyn van der Merwe by just 0.35 of a point.
“Winning at Jeffrey’s Bay was a dream come true for me. I have been representing the KZN junior surfing team for five consecutive years and was selected as this year’s girl captain,” said Teal.
She was automatically placed in the South African junior surfing team, receiving her green and gold Springbok blazer. Teal joins the SA junior team that will represent SA in the World junior surfing games 2014 in Rio, Brazil.
Ballito’s Sophie Bell finished in second place in the U13 girls category and posted the highest wave score in the final of eight.
The U13 girls final took place in large swell and Kai Woolf just managed to hold off the challenge of 2012 champion, Bell, to reclaim the title she won in Durban in 2011.
Sophie’s mother, Candy said she was very proud of her daughter and knows that she tried her utmost best.
Both Sophie and Teal are now preparing for the Umthombo Contest which will be held in Durban next month.
