Maskandi brother trio
The brothers from Maphumulo are causing a stir on the local music scene.
Mkhize brothers Khaye, Mthetho and Sakho’s latest album Sengiyazisola (meaning ‘The things I regret’) has been received with lots of love from maskandi music fans.
These brothers from Maphumulo formed their band Amakhabazela over five years ago and they have released three albums since. The word Amakhabazela is quoted from the Mkhize clan’s praise poem and it means to do thing ahead of others.
“We come from an artistic family and we grew up surrounded by maskandi music and Zulu dance. Our father was the leader of a Zulu dance group and we were part of it before music stole our hearts,” said Sakho.
The band is led by the youngest, Khaye who also plays the guitar while the other two sing backing vocals and dance. In 2010 they released their début album KwaMkhize Sazala (‘The Mkhize’s gave birth to greatness’) followed a year later by Thulani Nilale (‘Listen’).
Their latest offering hit the streets in June and Khaye said they have had a great response.
“Part of the reason we delayed the release of this album was the death of our producer in 2011. Finding a new producer and adapting to each other’s music styles took longer than expected,” said Sakho.
He said they were lucky to get legendary maskandi producer Chwephesha Hlabisa and well known accordionist Lahlumelenze Nxumalo to work on their album.
“We feel we have found our authentic sound and only great things are ahead. Next year might just see us going to the South African Music Awards,” said Mthetho.
Amakhabazela are currently promoting their album around KZN and Gauteng. For more information follow them on www.facebook.com/izinsizwanezintombi.zamakhabazela or phone 082 593 5452/ 011-4826445.
