Protest closes schools

Zamani Township, near Darnall, residents and blockaded roads and damaged public property last Friday.

KwaDukuza SAPS officers reacted quickly to stop a protest from spiraling out of control on Friday.

Angry residents from Zamani Township, near Darnall, blockaded roads and damaged public property from the early hours of the morning.

It is not clear why residents were protesting but reports indicate it was in connection with recent taxi fare increases.

KwaDukuza SAPS communications officer constable S’busiso Khumalo said 10 people between the ages of 19 and 40 years old were arrested for public violence.

They appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Monday and were released on a warning.

“We realise residents had some grievances to raise but gathering illegally and vandalising public property is a crime. There are channels to follow to raise issues.”

A number of schools closed their doors out of fear that their pupils would not be safe.

There were reports of protesters going into some schools to threaten teachers and pupils but Khumalo could not confirm this.

“We did hear of schools being affected so we ensured they were safe. As far as we are aware teaching and learning continued as normal.”
