A group of pink ladies marked the beginning of breast cancer awareness month at the Tash B Pilates studio last week.
A special class was held where breast cancer survivors Sharon van Straaten and Jane Law shared their inspirational stories.
“When I was diagnosed I was given a year to live. I was on a strong combination of chemotherapy three times a week and that took its toll, but I was determined not to give up. As a mother of two teenagers, dying was just not an option,” said Sharon. As part of her healing process Sharon began work with a foundation, Brave and Beautiful, which celebrates the life of cancer patients and survivors.
She travels as a motivational speaker, inspiring others and giving them hope.
Cancer survivor Jane Law, a mother of four who underwent a mastectomy, shared sobering statistics, telling the women that one in nine women is at risk of breast cancer.
“As women we must be vigilant. Listen to your body. There is no reason to be scared, though, of all types of cancer, breast cancer has the highest survival rate. You can beat it.”
Tash B Pilates owner Natasha Barnard thanked all the ladies who attended.
“We are strong and beautiful and we must look after ourselves.”
All class fees went to Brave and Beautiful.
