Conquering the Berg & Bush challenge

This race tested the riders to their limits.

Local Canebreakers mountain bike club riders took on the annual Berg and Bush race in the Winterton area last weekend.
The two-day annual event, organised by farmer Gary Green, raises funds for charity.
Mike Pengelly, Howard Essery, Russel and Tyron White, Mark Bates, Mark Johnson, Rich Young and Nevil Johnson braved the cold and misty conditions on Saturday, which tested the riders to their limits.
Part of the course going over Spioenkop mountain had to be abandoned for safety reasons as it was inaccessible by helicopter. The 62km stage wound its way through the picturesque Spioenkop nature reserve and the event showed a bit of its wild side when two of the Canebreakers saw a rhino mock charge a fellow rider.
Sunday turned out to be near perfect riding conditions for the final 50km stage.

All the Canebreakers made it back safely, albeit some a bit the worse for the wear and with war stories to boot.
