Taxi drivers concerned over violence

A driver was beaten up and his taxi stoned in Ntshawini on Wednesday.

Dolphin Coast Taxi Association drivers are currently meeting together with doormen in Shakaskraal leaving most passengers stranded.

The drivers brought called all taxis to a halt, demanding that their peers join them to discuss a way forward after a driver was beaten up and his taxi stoned in Ntshawini on Wednesday.

One of the passengers who was traveling from Groutville to Ballito said a mob of drivers armed with sticks and planks stopped the taxi she was in and demanded the driver come to the meeting.

“He (the driver) spent about 10 minutes pleading with them to let him drop the passengers in Ballito first. Most passengers were scared and wanted to get off the taxi because they felt threatened.”

She said they finally let them go but two drivers boarded the taxi to make sure the driver did not collect any passengers along the route.

The Ballito taxi rank remains abandoned while the meeting continues and KwaDukuza Taxi Association taxis are suspected to be using the N2 to get to Ballito.
